Occasionwear and the wear-and-return cycle
Occasionwear brands live closest to wardrobing. A customer needs one outfit for one night, and a generous returns policy quietly becomes a rental program with no rental fee.
The cycle repeats at predictable moments: wedding season, holidays, graduations, festival season. Return volume spikes after each, and a slice of those returns carries wear that inspection may or may not catch.
Brands often respond by tightening the policy for everyone: shorter windows, restocking fees, final sale categories. That punishes honest shoppers, who are the majority, while determined wardrobers simply adapt.
The better lever is per customer visibility. When you can see that one customer has returned their last nine occasion purchases within days of each event date, you can warn and then deny that customer while keeping the policy generous for everyone else.
